Racquet & Tennis Club of New York

Location:

370 Park Avenue, Manhattan

Challenge:

Built in 1918, the Racquet & Tennis Club is a landmark building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. CIP needed to perform extensive infrastructure work for the Club, including the replacement of an aging balustrade system and five translucent sky roofs that varied in size from 104’ x 33’5” to 27’6’ x 57”6” to 10’ x 25’. It was also essential to maintain the integrity of the existing cornice and façade.

This project presented both logistics and safety challenges as CIP had to follow strict OSHA and Article 19 requirements to protect the workers, the Club, and pedestrians on the street below.

In addition, during the sky roof replacement, the client decided to strip the existing structural steel of all rust and repaint all steel members, which required an economical scaffold system that would provide a working platform 50 feet above the courts below.

Solution:

CIP devised a successful solution that required strong technical coordination, an extensive protection and safety plan, efficient scheduling, and sensitivity to the ongoing operation of the club and its members.
