YMCA Prospect Park - Pool & Deck Replacement

357 Ninth Street, Prospect Heights, Brooklyn

Years of water penetration had caused the slab of this YMCA pool to suffer a severe loss in section, but shoring the deck within the tight confines of the tunnel would be a challenge. CIP was hired as a self-performing General Contractor to remove the damaged pool deck and replace it before the 2009 summer camps program began. Well aware of the impact on the community if the pool could not open for the summer, CIP worked diligently to successfully meet this goal.

To solve the branch’s water loss problem, our Design/Build team worked closely with the YMCA’s Architectural/Engineering group to develop an effective solution that included:

  • Devising an innovative conveyor system to move debris from the trenches directly into 20 yard containers in the rear yard, through an opening created in the exterior wall.
  • Fitting new structural decking that used the existing pool retaining wall and new structural steel support channels on the outside wall.
  • Installing a new waterproofing system compatible with the existing pool walls system.
  • Creating a new ceramic design and painting scheme to complement the existing pool tile design and create a fresh new environment.

CIP met the project’s financial and scheduling goals while assisting the YMCA’s Facilities Management’s team with several maintenance initiatives associated with the project.
